“What’s Forgiveness Day, August 27, To Do With Madoff And The Lockerbie Bomber?”

Today is Global Forgiveness Day, and a perfect opportunity to take another look at the practice of forgiveness.

Today, many find it easy to judge Bernie Madoff and the Lockerbie bomber, but where does the judgment end?   Do we ever consider the effects upon those doing the judging, namely ourselves?  And when, if ever, does forgiveness come into play?

A little known text titled, “A Course in Miracles” teaches that practicing forgiveness at every opportunity is the truest pathway to love.  That practicing forgiveness on an unremitting basis for all peoples is the only way to embrace our own inherent greatness.  It’s the ego that keeps us judging, trapped in a false perception of a Godless world and relentlessly seeking the face of sin.  Who is worthy of forgiveness, today?  The fact is that offering forgiveness, here and now, is the truest expression of love and enabler of miracles.

Today, let us practice forgiveness.

  • Lynn,

You make an incredible comparison between Madoff and the Lockerbie bomber. Given the scope and frequency of heinous acts, it is a wonder that life goes on as well as it does. The ability to rise above hatred and carry with some moral balance has much to do with it, I’m sure.
Yet, someone (not you or me), has to confront those committing heinous acts. We need to pray for them as well. Thank you for the energy and vision you bring to this dilemma.
